At the IMechE Future of Rail Presentation Competition, Mujadded Alif from the University of Huddersfield presented an AI-driven system for automated wheel flange measurement, emphasizing that wheel condition is a critical aspect of safety. Additionally, Network Rail's Danny Evans showcased a technique using drone surveys to capture point cloud data, allowing for the precise extraction of infrastructure layouts and cross-section drawings.

These technologies allow for more precise monitoring of critical components without disrupting active service. The shift toward AI and remote sensing reduces the need for manual inspections, thereby minimizing human error and increasing the frequency of safety checks.

Practical application of these methods on the railway between Bow in east London and Shenfield in Essex demonstrated the scalability of these innovations. The project delivered cost savings of £1.5 million compared to traditional methods and achieved a 75% reduction in 'boots on ballast' manual labor.

These advancements reflect a broader industry trend toward the digitalization of rail infrastructure. By leveraging AI and drones, the sector is moving toward a data-driven maintenance strategy essential for improving long-term network resilience and operational efficiency.
