Malaysia, July 2026 — Malaysia is strengthening railway security through the nationwide deployment of artificial intelligence-enabled surveillance cameras aimed at preventing cable theft and protecting critical rail assets. The initiative forms part of wider efforts to improve infrastructure resilience and maintain reliable train operations across the country’s railway network.

The government plans to install 1,146 AI-powered cameras by the fourth quarter of 2026, with 247 units already deployed at selected locations including stations, feeder stations, and Midpoint Track Section Locations (MPTSL). The RM14 million project is designed to enable faster identification of suspicious activities and improve monitoring of high-risk areas.

Railway cable theft has become a growing operational challenge, affecting service reliability and creating safety risks for passengers and operators. Over the past three years, Malaysia recorded 393 railway cable theft cases involving approximately 19,756 metres of cables and estimated losses of RM16.3 million.

The AI camera deployment will complement other security measures, including drone surveillance and the procurement of 20 scrambler motorcycles for Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) auxiliary police patrols. The government is also reviewing legal provisions to introduce stronger penalties for railway trespassing, vandalism, and cable theft offences.

As railway systems become more digitally connected and infrastructure-intensive, protecting assets through intelligent monitoring solutions is becoming a key priority for operators worldwide.
