Vietnam, October 2026 — Hanoi’s planned urban rail expansion is creating opportunities for international railway suppliers and domestic industrial partners to collaborate on rolling stock and technology development. Alstom and Vingroup, through its subsidiary Vinhomes, have entered an agreement to supply metro trains and transfer manufacturing technology to support the Vietnamese capital’s urban rail projects.
The agreement covers up to 83 five-car Metropolis trainsets to be designed and manufactured at Alstom’s Valenciennes Petite-Forêt facility in France. A technology licence agreement will support the assembly of another 117 trainsets in Vietnam, with Alstom providing components, engineering expertise and tooling support. The arrangement is intended to combine imported technology with the progressive development of domestic manufacturing capabilities.
The partnership could strengthen Vietnam’s capacity to participate in the rail supply chain while supporting the expansion of Hanoi’s metro network. Local assembly may also create opportunities for industrial skills development and greater involvement by Vietnamese companies in railway manufacturing. The agreement’s implementation will be important in determining how much technical capability can be transferred and sustained locally.
Hanoi’s Capital Master Plan sets out a target of developing 979 kilometres of urban rail across 18 lines by 2045. Alstom has previously supplied and integrated systems for Hanoi Metro Line 3, including ten four-car Metropolis trains, the Urbalis 400 signalling system, power supply and depot equipment. The new agreement extends the company’s involvement in Vietnam’s rail sector beyond its existing system supply activities.
The agreement reflects a wider regional trend towards combining international railway technology with domestic industrial participation. As Vietnam advances its urban rail ambitions, the delivery of rolling stock, technology transfer and local manufacturing will be key considerations in building a more developed railway industry and supporting long-term network expansion.
