August 2026 – New Delhi, India. Amazon India has become the first e-commerce company to operate on the inaugural Joint Parcel Product–Rapid Cargo Service (JPP-RCS) train on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). The daily service is intended to shift part of the company's shipment movement from surface transport to rail while strengthening connections between major logistics markets.
The service will use more than 10 Van Parcel units to connect Amazon's logistics network across Delhi, Ahmedabad and Surat, with onward connectivity to Pune, Mumbai and Goa. The WDFC extends approximately 1,504 km between New Dadri and Jawaharlal Nehru Port and has been developed to support faster, heavier and more cost-efficient freight operations.
For the rail sector, Amazon's participation provides an example of how dedicated freight infrastructure can attract high-value, time-sensitive cargo beyond conventional bulk commodities. The company expects the shift from surface transport to rail to support improvements in reliability, operational efficiency and sustainability, while the daily service provides additional utilisation for the newly expanded freight corridor.
The development builds on Amazon India's longer-term relationship with Indian Railways. The company began using the railway network for express parcel transportation in 2019 and commenced operations on dedicated freight corridors in 2023. Its rail network has since expanded from a single train to more than 140 trains operating across 130 intercity routes and connecting over 100 destination cities.
The expansion illustrates the growing role of dedicated freight corridors in India's multimodal logistics system. As the WDFC provides additional capacity for faster and heavier freight services, greater participation from e-commerce and other time-sensitive sectors could help broaden the corridor's cargo base and strengthen rail's position within India's rapidly expanding logistics market.
