Azerbaijan, October 2026 — Azerbaijan is strengthening its position as a regional transport and logistics hub as rail freight movements from China continue to grow. According to Azerbaijan Railways (ADY), the country received 416 block trains from China during the first nine months of 2026, highlighting rising demand for rail-based trade connections between Chinese manufacturing centres and markets farther west.
The growth supports the development of the Middle Corridor, a multimodal transport route linking China and Europe through Central Asia, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Georgia, with onward connections through Türkiye. The route combines rail transport, maritime shipping and port operations, making coordination between countries and transport providers essential to maintaining reliable cargo flows.
Azerbaijan’s railway infrastructure is central to this network. The Port of Baku at Alat provides a connection between rail services and shipping across the Caspian Sea, while the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway provides an onward land route through Georgia and Türkiye. Together, these links support the movement of goods between Central Asia and the South Caucasus and offer access to wider European transport networks.
Higher freight volumes could also generate economic activity beyond railway operations. Demand for cargo handling, warehousing, customs processing, distribution and logistics services may create opportunities for domestic businesses and investment. Improved transport connections could additionally help Azerbaijani producers reach overseas markets with agricultural products, processed foods and manufactured goods, supporting efforts to diversify the economy beyond oil and gas.
Sustaining this growth will depend on expanding transport capacity, improving coordination across borders and ensuring efficient transfers between railways, ports and shipping services. Cooperation among Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Türkiye and other corridor participants will be important as freight demand evolves. The latest figures provide a positive indicator of the corridor’s growing use, although continued investment and operational improvements will determine how effectively Azerbaijan converts transit traffic into lasting economic benefits.
