Thailand, September 2026 — Thailand is preparing to introduce a common-fare system across Bangkok’s urban rail network, with participating passengers set to pay no more than THB45 for a journey regardless of transfers between eligible lines. Authorities are coordinating technical and operational preparations ahead of the planned launch.
Under the proposed system, passengers transferring between participating rail lines would not incur separate entry charges. Existing contractual entry fares would remain capped at THB17, while the total fare for an eligible journey would be limited to THB45. The system is intended to cover Bangkok and surrounding provinces.
EMV contactless payments are planned as the main payment method, covering eligible credit and debit cards as well as Mangmoom cards. Passengers would initially pay the normal calculated fare, with the government refunding any amount above THB45 through the Paotang application or the account associated with the payment card, subject to final rules.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is also coordinating with the Ministry of Transport, Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand and Krungthep Thanakom on the Green and Gold lines. Proposed arrangements include transferring management of these lines to MRTA, covering their assets, revenues and liabilities, while temporary card readers and electronic data systems are installed to support the common-fare framework.
The initiative highlights the importance of fare integration as Bangkok’s urban rail network becomes increasingly interconnected. Beyond reducing the cost of transfers, a unified payment and fare-calculation system could improve interoperability between rail services, although agencies still need to complete technical testing, business rules and implementation arrangements before the targeted January 2027 launch.
