Maintaining public confidence in major rail infrastructure projects requires transparent communication and rigorous construction oversight. Bangladesh has clarified that soil removal beneath sections of the Padma Rail Link Bridge is an authorised part of the project's construction process rather than illegal excavation.

Dhaka, June 2026 — Bangladesh's Road Transport and Bridges Minister, Shaikh Rabiul Alam, has stated that recent soil excavation beneath the Padma Rail Link Bridge in Narayanganj is part of the project's approved construction and site restoration activities. The clarification follows public concern after images and videos of the excavation circulated on social media, prompting questions about the bridge's structural safety.

According to the minister, sections of the surrounding water body were temporarily filled with soil during bridge construction to facilitate engineering works. The current excavation is intended to remove that temporary fill and restore the site to its original condition, with dedicated project funding allocated for the work. Authorities stressed that the activity does not pose a risk to the bridge's foundations or operational integrity.

The issue gained attention after local residents raised concerns that soil was being removed illegally and sold commercially, leading the Narayanganj district administration to temporarily halt the work while verifying project documentation. Project officials and Bangladesh Railway subsequently confirmed that the excavation forms part of contractual site restoration requirements and is being supervised under established engineering procedures.

The incident highlights the importance of effective coordination between project authorities, contractors and local administrations during large-scale railway construction. Clear communication and transparent oversight can help address public concerns while ensuring that infrastructure works proceed safely and in accordance with approved engineering standards.

As Bangladesh continues expanding its national rail network through flagship projects such as the Padma Rail Link, maintaining public trust alongside robust construction governance will remain essential to the successful delivery of strategic railway infrastructure.
