India, September 2026 — Level crossings remain an important interface between railway operations and road traffic, particularly on busy commuter and regional routes. Southern Railway’s Chennai Division is upgrading this infrastructure by replacing manually operated gates with electrically operated lifting barriers (EOLBs).
Of the division’s 143 manned level crossings, 70 have now been equipped with EOLBs. The automated barriers can be opened or closed in approximately eight to 12 seconds, compared with up to three minutes for conventional hand-operated barriers. Each EOLB costs about ₹30 lakh.
The Chennai Beach–Chengalpet section has achieved full coverage, with all 13 manned crossings upgraded. Other works include 19 of 31 crossings on the Chengalpet–Arakkonam section, 11 of 29 on the Chennai Central–Gudur route and upgrades across several additional corridors. The remaining crossings will be addressed in phases based on road and rail traffic volumes.
Faster barrier operation is intended to reduce road-user waiting times and limit opportunities for vehicles to cross while gates are being operated. Southern Railway has also installed emergency sliding booms at 133 of the 143 crossings, providing a manually deployable alternative if a main barrier is damaged while allowing the crossing’s interlocking system to remain functional.
The programme reflects a wider railway focus on automating level-crossing operations and strengthening safety at interfaces between rail and road traffic. For Chennai’s increasingly busy corridors, combining automated barriers with emergency protection systems provides an additional layer of operational resilience while reducing the time required to manage each crossing.

Chennai Upgrades Level Crossings With Electrically Operated Barriers
Modernising level-crossing infrastructure can improve railway safety while reducing delays for both trains and road traffic. Chennai Division of Southern Railway has converted 70 of its 143 manned level crossings to electrically operated lifting barriers, cutting gate operation times from several minutes to seconds.
