China Accelerates High-Speed Rail Expansion, Cementing Global Dominance Through 2030

BEIJING, January 2026 — As a global leader in high-speed rail, China is set to further expand its extensive network, reinforcing its commitment to advanced transportation infrastructure. This initiative aligns with broader regional trends focused on enhancing connectivity and economic integration across Asia.

The national railway operator has outlined plans to increase the country's operational rail network to approximately 180,000 km by 2030. High-speed rail lines are projected to reach 60,000 km, constituting one-third of the total network, representing a 19% expansion over the next five years. Development also includes advancing trainsets capable of speeds up to 400 km/h.

This strategic expansion underscores China's ambition to maintain its dominant position in the global high-speed rail sector, which already accounts for over 70% of the world's total mileage. The enhanced network is expected to significantly boost nationwide connectivity and facilitate economic activity.

Between 2021 and 2025, China's high-speed rail network saw substantial growth, increasing by nearly 33% from 37,900 km to 50,400 km. This prior period of rapid development laid the groundwork for the current five-year plan, demonstrating a consistent trajectory of investment and progress.

The ongoing development in China's high-speed rail sector highlights a global trend towards investing in modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems.
