China Begins Testing Northernmost High-Speed Rail Line

High-speed rail is expanding into increasingly challenging climates, requiring infrastructure designed for extreme temperatures and frozen ground conditions. China has begun trial operations on the Harbin-Yichun high-speed railway in Heilongjiang, bringing its northernmost high-speed rail line closer to commercial service.

August 2026 – Harbin, China. China has commenced trial operations on the Harbin-Yichun high-speed railway in northeastern Heilongjiang Province. The 318-kilometre line traverses an alpine permafrost zone and is designed to extend high-speed rail connectivity further into China's northern regions.

The first test train departed Harbin at 7:40am and reached Yichun two hours and two minutes later. Designed for speeds of up to 250 km/h, the railway is expected to reduce the journey between the two cities from approximately seven hours to around two hours once commercial operations begin.

The trial phase is being used to verify train scheduling, station arrivals and departures, service frequencies, passenger facilities and compatibility between railway systems. These tests are intended to provide operational data ahead of the line's formal opening and ensure that infrastructure and services perform reliably under regional conditions.

One of the project's key engineering considerations is its location across permafrost terrain, where ground movement associated with freezing and thawing can create challenges for railway infrastructure. Bridges account for approximately 72% of the railway's length, reflecting the engineering approach adopted for the difficult terrain and environmental conditions.

The railway is expected to support Heilongjiang's wider economic revitalisation by improving access to Yichun and other northern communities while supporting tourism and the development of the region's ecological assets. Its progress also demonstrates how high-speed rail networks are being adapted to operate across increasingly demanding geographic and climatic environments.
