China, September 2026 – The Chongqing-Wanzhou High-Speed Railway in southwest China has completed track laying, bringing the project closer to its planned opening. The milestone marks the transition from major civil and track construction toward the remaining systems, testing and commissioning activities required before passenger operations.
Track laying was completed on September 1, with workers installing railway infrastructure along the route in Wanzhou District of Chongqing. The line is designed for a maximum operating speed of 350 km/h, placing it within China’s high-speed rail network of higher-speed intercity and regional corridors.
The completion of track installation is an important step in preparing the railway for subsequent stages of construction and operational readiness. Once supporting systems and testing are completed, the line is expected to strengthen rail connectivity between Chongqing and Wanzhou while improving access across southwestern China.
The project also forms part of the broader expansion of China’s high-speed railway network, where new lines are being developed to improve connections between major cities and regional centres. Higher-speed links are intended to shorten travel times while supporting greater integration between urban areas and surrounding economic regions.
The Chongqing-Wanzhou line’s progress therefore reflects the continued pace of high-speed rail development in China. With track laying complete, the project is moving closer to the operational phase and will contribute additional capacity to the country’s extensive 350 km/h railway network.
