Malaysia, September 2026 — Passenger fares for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) have not yet been finalised, with Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) confirming that official fares are expected to be announced by the end of 2026. The announcement will follow evaluation and approval by the Ministry of Transport.
MRL issued the clarification after fare information circulating on social media was found to be inaccurate and had not been verified by any authority. The company advised the public to rely on official announcements from the Ministry of Transport, MRL and ECRL rather than unverified fare estimates.
The final fare structure will take into consideration public interest, passenger affordability and the value and quality of services provided. The approach is intended to balance accessibility for users with the operational and service requirements of Malaysia’s new intercity rail connection.
The first phase, linking Kota Bharu to Gombak, is expected to begin operations in December 2026. Once operational, journey times are projected at around four hours between Kota Bharu and Gombak, three hours between Kuala Terengganu and Gombak, and approximately one hour and 35 minutes between Kuantan and Gombak.
The ECRL is expected to provide a new rail connection between Malaysia’s East Coast states and the Klang Valley, supporting passenger mobility while strengthening the broader transport network. The upcoming fare decision will therefore be an important factor in determining the accessibility and attractiveness of the service ahead of its launch.
