"The expansion of passenger rail services across the United Arab Emirates marks a significant step towards integrating intercity transport and reducing reliance on road travel. On 30 September 2026, Etihad Rail introduced passenger services connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai, offering a new travel option between the country’s two major urban centres. "

UAE, October 2026 — The launch of passenger rail services between Abu Dhabi and Dubai represents a milestone in the development of the UAE’s national railway network. The service extends the role of Etihad Rail beyond freight transport, providing an additional option for intercity mobility and supporting wider efforts to improve connectivity between the emirates.

The newly operational connection links Mohammed Bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi with Al Yalayis Station in Dubai. According to CNN correspondent Eleni Giokos, the journey takes approximately 64 minutes. The onboard experience includes Comfort and Premium classes, with features designed to support passenger comfort and productivity during travel.

The connection provides an alternative to road journeys between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which can take an hour or longer depending on traffic conditions. By introducing a rail option between the two major urban centres, the service could support more predictable journey times and strengthen connections between residential, commercial and employment areas.

Etihad Rail’s broader passenger network is planned to connect 11 cities across the UAE. The company is also developing a separate high-speed rail link between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, targeted for completion in 2030. The proposed service is expected to reduce the journey time between the two cities to around 30 minutes, representing a further step in the country’s intercity transport development.

The introduction of passenger services reflects the UAE’s wider investment in integrated transport infrastructure and national connectivity. As the network expands, its long-term impact will depend on passenger demand, station accessibility and connections with local public transport. These factors will be important in establishing rail as a practical alternative to private vehicles for intercity journeys.
