Etihad Rail Passenger Network Set for 2026 Launch, Enhancing UAE Connectivity

As the Gulf Cooperation Council region prioritizes large-scale infrastructure projects to foster economic growth and sustainable transport, the United Arab Emirates is nearing a significant milestone with the upcoming passenger launch of its national railway network, Etihad Rail. This initiative is poised to redefine inter-emirate travel and logistics, aligning with broader Asian trends towards modern, integrated transportation systems.

The Etihad Rail network, spanning 900 kilometers, will connect 11 cities and regions across all seven emirates, from Al Sila on the Saudi border to Fujairah on the east coast. Passenger services are scheduled to commence in phases throughout 2026, with trains capable of carrying up to 400 passengers. Key routes include Abu Dhabi to Dubai in approximately 57 minutes via the standard service, and Abu Dhabi to Fujairah in about 1 hour and 45 minutes. A separate high-speed line between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is also under development, aiming for travel times of around 30 minutes.

This expansion into passenger services is expected to significantly impact regional mobility, offering a fast, low-emission alternative to road travel and domestic flights. The network's design emphasizes first- and last-mile connectivity, integrating with local transport providers and utilizing a digital-first ticketing model. Beyond standard services, Etihad Rail is also introducing luxury "rail cruise" options, reflecting a growing demand for premium travel experiences.

Etihad Rail's freight operations have been running since late 2023, demonstrating the network's operational readiness and capacity to handle substantial cargo volumes. The passenger network's development is a key component of the UAE's decarbonization strategy, with the infrastructure designed to be electrification-ready and projected to cut millions of tonnes of CO2 annually. Future plans also include international links, such as the Hafeet Rail connection to Oman and potential connectivity to Saudi Arabia, further integrating the region.

The phased rollout of Etihad Rail's passenger services underscores a commitment to developing a comprehensive, sustainable, and efficient national transportation backbone. This project aligns with global trends in high-speed rail development and integrated multimodal transport, positioning the UAE as a leader in advanced infrastructure within the broader Asian context.
