Taiwan’s urban rail expansion is creating opportunities for regional engineering firms to deliver integrated railway infrastructure and systems. Malaysian construction group Gamuda and Taiwan-based MiTAC Information Technology have secured a RM3.7 billion contract to develop trackwork and railway systems for the Keelung mass rapid transit (MRT) project, strengthening Gamuda’s international rail portfolio.

Taiwan, October 2026 — Urban rail development across East Asia increasingly requires coordinated delivery of civil infrastructure, railway systems and operational technology to support expanding metropolitan transport networks. Gamuda Bhd has secured a major contract through a joint venture with MiTAC Information Technology to deliver trackwork and systems for Taiwan’s Keelung MRT project.

The RM3.7 billion contract was awarded by the Department of Rapid Transit Systems under the New Taipei City Government. Gamuda holds a 72.84% participating interest in the unincorporated joint venture, while MiTAC holds the remaining 27.16%. Gamuda’s share of the contract is valued at approximately RM2.7 billion, with completion scheduled over 2,820 days, equivalent to about 7.7 years.

The project covers a 15.6-kilometre alignment serving 13 stations across Taipei City, New Taipei City and Keelung City. The scope includes trackwork, rolling stock, power supply, signalling, platform screen doors, communications, central monitoring systems, automatic fare collection and depot maintenance equipment. This integrated package spans multiple components required to establish and operate a functioning urban rail service.

The contract forms part of additional works associated with the Xizhi–Donghu MRT project, which Gamuda secured in October 2024. The latest award is expected to contribute positively to the company’s revenue and earnings from the financial year ending July 2027 through to project completion. It also adds to Gamuda’s overseas infrastructure portfolio, following other major contract awards in Australia.

The development highlights the continued role of international engineering partnerships in delivering complex urban rail systems across Asia. By combining construction expertise with local technology capabilities, the joint venture will undertake a broad range of railway systems work, reflecting the growing importance of integrated project delivery in the region’s expanding metropolitan transport networks.
