Australia, June 2026 — The Queensland Government has announced the GC Surfer, a high-frequency metro-style bus service that will replace the previously cancelled Stage 4 extension of the Gold Coast Light Rail to Gold Coast Airport. The new service will operate every 10 minutes between Robina, Varsity Lakes, Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast Airport, and Coolangatta, providing improved east-west connectivity across the southern Gold Coast.
The revised transport plan forms part of a broader multimodal strategy that combines enhanced bus services with continued rail investment. While the southern light rail extension has been abandoned following community opposition, the government confirmed a new northern light rail spur linking Harbour Town with Gold Coast University Hospital via Olsen Avenue and Oxley Drive, adding new stations at Musgrave Avenue, Labrador, and Biggera Waters.
For the rail sector, the decision reflects the evolving role of integrated transport planning, where rail and bus rapid transit are being deployed together to improve network coverage and respond to local constraints. The GC Surfer is intended to strengthen connections between Queensland Rail services at Robina and Varsity Lakes, the existing G:link light rail network, Gold Coast Airport, and surrounding activity centres, supporting seamless multimodal travel.
The transport programme is expected to be delivered before the 2032 Olympic Games, although project costs and detailed delivery timelines have yet to be announced. The government has indicated that further planning and procurement will determine the final scope of both the metro-style bus network and the northern light rail extension.
The announcement highlights the growing trend of combining rail infrastructure with high-capacity bus services to address changing transport needs. As cities expand and travel demand increases, multimodal solutions are becoming an important strategy for improving public transport accessibility while maintaining flexibility in infrastructure investment.
