China, September 2026 — Crews have begun laying continuous long rails on the Guangzhou-Foshan West Intercity Railway, marking the start of track installation for the 47-kilometre connection between Foshan’s Nanhai District and Guangzhou’s Huadu and Baiyun districts.
The line will feature nine stations, including seven newly constructed stations, and is intended to strengthen rail connectivity within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The milestone follows the completion of the project’s tunnelling and bridge structures, allowing construction activity to shift towards track systems.
Track installation presents technical challenges because the railway passes through a combination of bridges, tunnels and active urban intersections across three municipal districts. Contractors are using battery-powered mobile flash-butt rail welders and zero-emission rail saws to support precision rail installation while reducing emissions during construction.
The project is also incorporating digital construction management through intelligent cloud-control platforms. These systems are being used to coordinate work schedules and provide real-time safety alerts, supporting construction oversight as track installation progresses.
The Guangzhou-Foshan West Intercity Railway forms part of wider efforts to improve rail integration across the Greater Bay Area. Its completion is expected to add another intercity connection between Guangzhou and Foshan while supporting the development of a more interconnected regional rail network.
