Digital fare collection is becoming an increasingly important component of modern urban rail systems as operators seek more reliable, flexible and integrated passenger services. In Jakarta, Hitachi Rail is upgrading the existing automatic fare collection system across the MRT network’s first-phase stations as the city continues to expand its metro infrastructure.

Indonesia, August 2026 – Hitachi Rail, in partnership with PT Softorb Technology Indonesia, has been awarded a contract to modernise the automatic fare collection (AFC) system across all 13 stations of Phase 1 of the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit system. The project is being delivered for PT Mass Rapid Transit Jakarta (Perseroda) and will focus on improving the performance and reliability of the existing fare collection infrastructure.

The upgrade will involve enhancements to the AFC system serving Jakarta MRT’s existing North-South Line stations. The modernised platform is intended to support additional payment methods and account-based ticketing, allowing the fare collection infrastructure to accommodate changing passenger payment preferences while improving system functionality and operational performance.

For the urban rail sector, upgrading AFC infrastructure within an operating metro system presents different requirements from deploying a new system on a greenfield line. Existing gates, software, payment interfaces and station equipment must continue supporting daily passenger operations while new technologies are introduced, making system integration and reliability important considerations.

The project also forms part of Jakarta MRT’s wider digitalisation and network-development programme. Hitachi Rail and Sumitomo Corporation were separately awarded a contract in June 2026 for the automatic fare collection system for Phase 2A of the North-South Line, covering seven new stations and supporting the development of a next-generation AFC platform.

The modernisation of the existing 13-station system alongside AFC deployment for the network’s expansion illustrates the growing importance of interoperable ticketing infrastructure in urban rail. As Jakarta develops its MRT network, integrating payment technologies across existing and future stations could support more seamless passenger journeys while improving the operational efficiency of the wider system.
