TOKYO, January 2026 — Japan's commitment to pioneering high-speed rail technology is underscored by the ongoing development of the L0 Series Maglev train, a project poised to set new global speed records. This initiative represents a significant advancement in the nation's already advanced Shinkansen network.
The Central Japan Railway Company is currently testing the L0 Series, a Japanese Maglev train designed to reach unprecedented speeds. With a potential top speed of 603 km/h, it significantly surpasses the current record holder, China's Shanghai Maglev, which operates at 465 km/h. This new service is planned for the vital Tokyo to Nagoya route.
This technological leap promises to halve the current travel time between Tokyo and Nagoya, utilizing magnetic levitation to lift the train above the tracks for frictionless, high-speed travel. The construction of the dedicated Chuo-Shinkansen line is underway to accommodate these advanced capabilities.
