ASTANA, March 2026 — Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are intensifying efforts to bolster their rail freight capabilities and streamline cross-border logistics. This strategic focus aims to leverage rail transport as a key driver for economic growth and regional integration.
The core of these plans involves the construction of the new Darbaza–Maktaaral railway line, which will connect to the Maktaaral–Syrdarya interstate crossing point. Alongside this new infrastructure, significant modernization of existing railway networks is slated, including the implementation of advanced automatic block and interlocking systems to improve efficiency and safety.
These developments are poised to enhance transportation capacity and facilitate smoother transit of goods between the two nations and beyond. Stakeholders in the rail sector, logistics providers, and businesses reliant on efficient freight movement are expected to benefit from improved connectivity and reduced transit times.
The strategic initiatives were formalized during a meeting between Talgat Aldybergenov, Chairman of the Board of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, and Zufar Narzullaev, Chairman of the Board of Uzbekistan Railways. The discussion took place at Maktaaral station during a working visit to the under-construction Darbaza–Maktaaral railway line.
