KUALA LUMPUR — The Kelana Jaya LRT is set to bolster its fleet with 26 new train sets by 2028 under a MYR1 billion allocation approved in the 2026 federal budget, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced.

The acquisition is aimed at improving service reliability and reinforcing operational resilience along one of the Klang Valley’s busiest urban rail corridors. The new rolling stock will gradually support and complement the ageing Bombardier 818 series trains currently in operation.

The trains will be supplied by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), which maintains a manufacturing facility in Batu Gajah, Perak. The procurement follows the deployment of additional train sets introduced last year and forms part of a broader strategy to minimise service disruptions and enhance system stability.

The announcement comes in the wake of recent service interruptions on the Kelana Jaya line, prompting authorities to direct Prasarana Malaysia Berhad to intensify preventive maintenance efforts. Measures include expediting spare parts procurement and strengthening passenger communication protocols to ensure smoother operations moving forward.

The fleet expansion marks a significant step in sustaining the long-term reliability of the Kelana Jaya corridor as ridership demand continues to grow.
