Kochi Metro Integrates Five Transport Modes Through New Digital Platform

Urban rail operators are increasingly using digital platforms to integrate multiple transport services and improve journey planning for passengers. Kochi Metro Rail Ltd is launching a redesigned website developed with Cochin University of Science and Technology students, bringing metro, water metro, feeder buses, e-autos and shared bicycles into a single passenger information platform.

India, August 2026 – Kochi Metro Rail Ltd is launching a new website designed to reflect the expansion of its transport services beyond metro rail. The platform replaces a website developed about a decade ago and provides passengers with a more integrated interface for accessing information and planning journeys across the operator’s growing multimodal network.

The platform covers five modes of travel: metro trains, water metro services, feeder buses, e-autos and shared bicycles. It also provides ticket-booking access, station and facility information, nearby locations and live train-running status. The website and mobile application have been designed with different user requirements in mind, including simpler functionality for mobile users with lower-specification devices.

The project was developed through collaboration between Kochi Metro and the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat). Four BTech information technology students developed the website in approximately two to three weeks after analysing the existing platform. Their involvement follows an earlier KMRL-Cusat project, creating a longer-term industry-academia relationship around digital technology.

Beyond passenger information, the platform includes a “Beyond Travel” section covering business, career and other services. KMRL also plans to introduce a carbon-footprint tracking feature, allowing users to assess the environmental impact associated with its services. This adds a sustainability-oriented function to the digital platform alongside its core journey-planning capabilities.

The development reflects a broader shift in urban transport towards integrated mobility platforms rather than standalone railway information systems. For metro operators, combining journey planning, ticketing, real-time information and multimodal connectivity in a single digital interface can improve the passenger experience while supporting more seamless use of interconnected public transport services.
