Transitioning to high-capacity hydrogen fuel is critical for the decarbonization of heavy rail transport. The Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) has now successfully demonstrated a liquefied hydrogen-based hybrid propulsion system, marking a significant step toward viable long-distance zero-emission rail.

DANGJIN, June 2026 — The pursuit of zero-emission rail transport requires fuel solutions that overcome the energy density limitations and storage challenges associated with conventional gaseous hydrogen.

On June 9, 2026, KRRI demonstrated an integrated supply system at its Dangjin test site. The technology utilizes a highly insulated storage vessel that maintains liquefied hydrogen at -253°C and an integrated vaporizer, designed to power four 100 kW-class fuel cells simultaneously.

By integrating the storage vessel and vaporization system into a single unit, KRRI has significantly reduced the overall volume and weight of onboard equipment. This efficiency is expected to more than double the existing single-charge range of approximately 600 km, enhancing the feasibility of hydrogen for long-haul operations.

The demonstration was conducted under a regulatory sandbox following safety approvals from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Gas Safety Corporation. This framework allows for the practical testing of liquefied hydrogen in an environment where comprehensive domestic regulations are not yet fully established.

This development aligns with broader global trends toward the conversion of diesel fleets and the adoption of high-capacity hydrogen fuel in rail and maritime mobility, offering a scalable path toward sustainable heavy transport.
