Urban rail systems are increasingly adopting automated operations to improve capacity, reliability, and passenger experience. Malaysia has officially opened the LRT3 Shah Alam Line, introducing fully automated driverless trains supplied by CRRC to strengthen connectivity across the western Klang Valley corridor.

Malaysia, June 2026 — Malaysia has inaugurated the Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) Shah Alam Line, marking a major expansion of the Klang Valley’s urban rail network. The 37.8-kilometre automated line connects Bandar Utama to Johan Setia in Selangor, providing a new high-capacity transport corridor serving residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

The LRT3 network consists of 20 stations and operates using Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) technology, enabling fully unattended train operations. CRRC Corporation supplied 22 three-car trainsets for the initial fleet, with each train capable of carrying up to 624 passengers and operating at speeds of up to 80 km/h. The trains feature regenerative braking technology and intelligent air-conditioning systems designed to optimise energy efficiency and passenger comfort.

The introduction of driverless rolling stock represents a significant milestone for Malaysia’s urban mobility development. Automated train control systems allow operators to improve service frequency, optimise fleet management, and enhance operational consistency while reducing reliance on manual train operation. The line is expected to benefit approximately two million residents across the corridor by providing improved access to key employment and population centres.

The LRT3 project also reflects Malaysia’s continued investment in advanced rail technologies and local urban transport capacity. The line incorporates communications-based train control (CBTC) technology and integrates with existing networks, including the MRT Kajang Line, LRT Kelana Jaya Line, and KTM Komuter services, supporting a more connected metropolitan transport system.

As cities across Asia continue expanding mass transit networks, LRT3 demonstrates the growing importance of automation, smart rolling stock, and integrated infrastructure in modern rail development. The project highlights how advanced rail systems can support sustainable urban growth while improving mobility options in rapidly developing regions.
