Malaysia is poised to reactivate a crucial cross-border rail link with Thailand, signaling a renewed focus on enhancing regional transport infrastructure and economic ties within Southeast Asia.

KOTA BHARU, January 2026 — Malaysia has declared its readiness to revive the railway connection between Rantau Panjang and Sungai Golok, Thailand, a move aimed at strengthening bilateral economic relations and transport links. This initiative is part of Malaysia's medium-term planning, focusing on enhancing cross-border connectivity.

The project involves the reactivation of the Rantau Panjang Corridor, specifically the rail link between Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang, necessitating track rehabilitation. The Malaysian government is also open to Thailand's intention to extend its rail network to Rantau Panjang, though discussions have been impacted by recent political changes in Thailand.

Included in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the project is currently in the tender documentation preparation phase, with tenders expected to be called soon. Implementation is projected to take approximately two years, with an estimated cost of RM264 million. The goal is to re-establish passenger and cargo train services, thereby bolstering regional trade and logistics.

This development underscores a broader trend of infrastructure investment in ASEAN, aiming to facilitate greater economic integration and trade. The successful revival of this link could serve as a model for future cross-border transport projects in the region, contingent on continued bilateral cooperation and political stability.
