UNITED STATES, April 2026 — Manistee County is moving forward with its “Safer Southern Rail Route” initiative, a long-term infrastructure project designed to modernise freight rail operations and remove outdated track alignments from urban areas.
The project centres on rerouting freight traffic around Manistee Lake via a new causeway-style rail bridge, replacing ageing infrastructure that currently requires trains to cross multiple outdated bridges and follow indirect routes. County officials are seeking over $3 million in federal funding to advance planning and design, building on earlier grants secured through federal rail safety programmes.
A key component involves eliminating eight existing rail lines running through downtown and residential areas. These tracks, some more than a century old, contribute to safety risks, traffic delays, and noise, while also constraining land use and waterfront development opportunities.
From a freight perspective, the reroute is expected to improve operational reliability and reduce delays for key industrial users, including major manufacturers reliant on rail for raw materials and distribution. The new alignment will also shorten travel distances and reduce the need for complex bridge operations, strengthening the corridor’s long-term efficiency.
The initiative forms part of a broader infrastructure strategy linking rail improvements with highway upgrades and urban redevelopment, with completion targeted by 2031. It reflects a wider trend in the United States toward reconfiguring legacy rail infrastructure to balance freight efficiency with community and economic development objectives.
