Rail operators are placing greater emphasis on domestic testing facilities to accelerate fleet modernisation and improve service reliability. A new continuous railway test loop in central England is expected to reduce reliance on overseas testing while supporting the introduction of new rolling stock.

United Kingdom, June 2026 — Porterbrook has officially opened the UK's first continuous railway test loop at its Rail Innovation Centre in Long Marston following a £75 million investment. Measuring more than 3.5km, the facility is designed to enable comprehensive testing of new and refurbished trains before they enter passenger service, helping identify and resolve technical issues under controlled operating conditions.

The test loop supports train operations at speeds of up to 50mph, allowing manufacturers and operators to accumulate mileage, validate performance and assess system reliability using mainline-standard signalling and overhead electrification. Construction began in January 2025, and the site has been developed with sustainability in mind, including plans for a solar farm to power its electrified infrastructure while minimising earthworks during construction.

The facility completed its inaugural run using a prototype hydrogen-powered train developed by Porterbrook, demonstrating its capability to support testing of emerging low-emission rolling stock technologies. Until now, many trains intended for the UK market have required testing overseas, adding time and complexity to fleet introduction programmes. The new centre is expected to streamline the approval process while reducing disruption to the operational railway.

The investment also reflects preparations for future rolling stock procurement as the UK rail sector continues modernising its ageing fleet under the transition to Great British Railways. By providing integrated testing, training and engineering capabilities within the UK, the Long Marston facility is positioned to strengthen domestic rail innovation and support the delivery of more reliable passenger services.
