Hong Kong, September 2026 — A signalling fault disrupted northbound high-speed rail services at Hong Kong’s West Kowloon terminus on September 6, temporarily affecting the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link. The incident caused delays across several cross-border services before normal operations gradually resumed.

The Hong Kong Transport Department said the MTR Corporation notified authorities at around 8:30am that services were being delayed because of a signal fault. The issue was resolved at approximately 9:15am, bringing the disruption to around 45 minutes.

According to China's 12306 railway service platform, at least 15 northbound trains were delayed. Affected destinations included Futian, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Zhangjiajie, Xi'an, Tianjin and Chengdu, demonstrating the disruption's impact across multiple long-distance and regional services.

The incident highlights the operational importance of signalling systems at major high-speed rail terminals, where a technical fault can quickly affect multiple services and destinations. For cross-border networks, effective coordination between infrastructure managers, operators and transport authorities is also essential for managing disruptions and communicating accurate service information to passengers.

Following the incident, Hong Kong's Electrical and Mechanical Services Department requested that the rail operator conduct a comprehensive review. The response underscores the importance of system reliability, technical monitoring and post-incident assessment as high-speed rail networks continue to support increasingly interconnected regional passenger services.
