India, June 2026 — SYSTRA has been awarded a Detailed Design Consultancy services contract by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (GMRCL) for the next stage of the Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 project. The appointment builds on the company's previous work on the original Phase 2 design and strengthens its long-term partnership with GMRCL.
The consultancy covers two new elevated metro extensions. Phase 2A comprises a 5.11 km airport link with four stations connecting Koteshwar Road to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, while Phase 2B will deliver a 3.3 km extension with three stations serving Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). Both corridors are intended to improve access to major transport gateways and emerging commercial districts.
Under the contract, SYSTRA will provide detailed engineering design services to support project delivery, ensuring the new infrastructure integrates with the existing metro network. The extensions are expected to enhance urban mobility, improve passenger accessibility, and accommodate increasing travel demand as Ahmedabad and its surrounding economic zones continue to expand.
The award reinforces the growing role of engineering consultancies in delivering India's expanding metro programme, where cities are investing in integrated public transport to support sustainable urban development. It also highlights Gujarat's continued investment in rail infrastructure as a catalyst for economic growth and improved regional connectivity.
