Türkiye, July 2026 — Türkiye has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding its high-speed rail network as part of a broader strategy to modernise the national transport system and improve connectivity between major population and economic centres. The programme forms a key component of the country's long-term infrastructure agenda, with rail expected to play a larger role in both passenger mobility and sustainable transport.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure plans to increase the country's high-speed rail network from approximately 2,251 kilometres to around 4,122 kilometres through a series of new railway projects. Ongoing construction includes major corridors such as Ankara–İzmir, Mersin–Adana–Osmaniye–Gaziantep, Bandırma–Bursa–Yenişehir–Osmaneli, and Karaman–Ulukışla, alongside preparations for additional strategic routes.
The expansion is expected to improve journey times, increase rail's share of intercity passenger transport, and strengthen economic links between industrial centres, ports, and regional cities. By extending high-speed rail services to more provinces, the government aims to support balanced regional development while offering a more efficient alternative to road and air travel.
Türkiye has steadily expanded its high-speed rail network since launching its first line in 2009. Existing services currently connect major cities including Ankara, Istanbul, Eskişehir, Konya, Karaman, and Sivas, with millions of passengers using the network annually. Continued investment in electrified infrastructure, signalling systems, and modern rolling stock is supporting the country's ambition to develop a comprehensive national high-speed rail system.
The latest expansion plans reflect a broader global trend of governments investing in high-capacity rail infrastructure to meet growing mobility demand while reducing transport-related emissions. As new corridors enter service over the coming years, Türkiye is positioning high-speed rail as a key driver of economic competitiveness, regional connectivity, and sustainable transport development.
