Taiwan High Speed Rail Begins Testing New N700ST Trainsets

Taiwan, September 2026 – Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp has started static testing of its first N700ST train at the Yenchao Depot in Kaohsiung following its delivery and assembly in Taiwan. The train is the first of 12 new trainsets purchased from Japan and is scheduled to enter passenger service in July 2027.

The initial static testing phase is scheduled for completion in November, after which the train will undergo dynamic testing on the high-speed rail network and final acceptance testing. THSRC plans to verify 69 test items covering performance and safety, train equipment and passenger service facilities before the new train is cleared for commercial operations.

Testing at the Yenchao Depot includes power-on checks and low-speed operation to confirm system integration and basic operating performance. Dynamic testing will subsequently take place during overnight maintenance periods, with speeds gradually increased according to established testing procedures before comprehensive final acceptance testing is conducted under actual operating conditions.

The testing programme covers key railway systems including traction and braking, running stability, aerodynamic performance, car-body strength, overhead catenary compatibility and automatic train control. Equipment and passenger-service checks will also assess wheel bearings, adhesion and wheel-slip prevention, auxiliary batteries, lighting, toilets, ride comfort and onboard noise levels.

The first three N700ST trainsets are expected to gradually enter service from July 2027, while the overall dynamic testing programme is scheduled to conclude by the end of April 2027. The fleet renewal represents an important step in maintaining Taiwan’s high-speed rail performance as demand continues to place pressure on the existing network and rolling stock.
