Thailand Plans 74-Km Rail Link Between Suphan Buri And Ayutthaya

Thailand, August 2026 – The Department of Rail Transport (DRT) is pursuing a proposed 73.8-km railway between Suphan Buri and Ban Phachi in Ayutthaya. The project is intended to close a gap in Thailand’s railway network while improving connectivity between Suphan Buri and the wider rail system centred around Ban Phachi.

The proposed route is expected to strengthen rail access for both passenger and freight movements, particularly by connecting Suphan Buri more directly with an important railway junction in Ayutthaya. Ban Phachi serves as a strategic interchange on Thailand’s existing network, providing connections towards Bangkok and several regional corridors.

For the rail sector, the connection could improve the efficiency of freight movements by providing a more direct rail route from western and central Thailand towards established mainline infrastructure. Better connectivity could also support agricultural and industrial supply chains in Suphan Buri and surrounding provinces, while reducing the need for road-based transport for suitable cargo.

The proposal forms part of Thailand’s broader effort to improve regional rail connectivity alongside ongoing double-track and new-line developments. By filling network gaps rather than relying exclusively on upgrades to existing corridors, the DRT is seeking to create additional routing options and improve the overall resilience of the national railway system.

The planned Suphan Buri–Ban Phachi link highlights the role of regional rail infrastructure in strengthening Thailand’s domestic logistics network. If developed, the project could provide a new connection between provincial economic activity and the national railway system, supporting greater use of rail for both freight distribution and regional passenger mobility.
