Uzbekistan Accelerates Rail Modernization with 200 New Passenger Car Acquisition

UZBEKISTAN, January 2026 — Uzbekistan Railways is embarking on a significant fleet renewal program, signaling a commitment to enhancing passenger rail services across the nation. This strategic move aligns with broader trends in Central Asia, where countries are increasingly prioritizing the modernization of their transportation infrastructure to support economic growth and connectivity.

The national railway company will procure 200 new passenger cars, financed through a $143 million loan from the Reconstruction and Development Fund, scheduled for disbursement between 2026 and 2027. This acquisition, mandated by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, is slated for delivery between 2026 and 2030, directly addressing the need to upgrade aging rolling stock.

This substantial investment is expected to improve the quality and capacity of passenger transport, potentially boosting domestic travel and regional connectivity. The initiative also involves the subsidiary Uztemiryolyolovchi, which will receive the new cars as part of a comprehensive modernization strategy.

Further supporting domestic rail manufacturing capabilities, Uzbekistan has outlined plans to produce 250 passenger cars over the next five years. Additionally, management of the Tashkent Passenger Car Construction and Repair Plant has been transferred to a trust managed by Russian companies, indicating international collaboration in developing rolling stock production for both rail and metro systems.

This fleet expansion and domestic production drive by Uzbekistan reflects a growing emphasis on advanced rail infrastructure across Asia. It positions the country to better leverage its strategic location for passenger transit and contributes to the ongoing development of efficient, modern railway networks throughout the continent.
