Large-scale railway stations are increasingly being designed as integrated transport hubs that support regional development, digital operations and sustainable infrastructure. China's Xiong'an Railway Station exemplifies this approach by combining advanced construction technologies with long-term urban planning.

China, June 2026 — Xiong'an Railway Station, one of Asia's largest railway stations, was completed in approximately two years and has become a central component of China's high-speed rail network. Covering around 475,200 square metres (5.1 million square feet), the station connects the planned Xiong'an New Area with Beijing and the wider Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region through high-speed rail services.

The project utilised advanced construction techniques, including Building Information Modelling (BIM), welding robots and real-time digital monitoring systems to accelerate delivery while maintaining construction quality. The station's distinctive oval design spans five levels and incorporates extensive smart building technologies to optimise passenger movement, operational efficiency and asset management. Renewable energy also forms part of the development, with rooftop solar panels contributing to the station's electricity supply.

As the first major infrastructure project completed in Xiong'an New Area, the station plays a strategic role beyond passenger transport. It supports the Chinese government's objective of redistributing selected administrative, commercial and industrial functions from Beijing while strengthening regional connectivity through high-speed rail. The hub facilitates the movement of passengers, goods and information, reinforcing integration across one of China's most economically significant urban regions.

The development highlights how modern railway stations are evolving into catalysts for urban growth rather than serving solely as transport interchanges. By combining digital construction methods, sustainable design and high-capacity rail infrastructure, Xiong'an Railway Station provides a model for future station developments supporting large-scale regional planning and high-speed rail expansion.
