Bangladesh has identified 27 critical bearing pads on Dhaka’s Uttara–Motijheel metro rail route, alongside cracks of varying severity in 46 piers. Authorities have begun implementing safety audit recommendations, including structural monitoring and replacement works targeted for completion by November 30, 2026.

Bangladesh, September 2026 — Bangladesh has classified 27 bearing pads on the Uttara–Motijheel section of Dhaka Metro Rail as critical following an independent safety audit. The audit identified defects in 730 bearing pads, although authorities clarified that not all of the affected components pose the same level of risk.

Of the 730 pads, 147 were categorised as having minor defects, while problems involving another 297 were primarily attributed to installation and workmanship. The remaining 27 were classified as critical and are now scheduled for replacement by November 30.

The safety audit also identified cracks or fissures of varying severity in 46 piers along the route. Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited has formed a committee to implement the audit recommendations, while steel brackets have been installed at 10 locations where bearing pad displacement could pose a risk. Settlement markers have also been installed at 27 locations to monitor structural movement.

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology is being appointed as a structural consultant to assess the risks associated with the 46 affected piers and recommend appropriate repair strategies. Structural crack gauges are also being installed at 102 locations, with installation targeted for completion by October 31.

The inspection and remediation programme highlights the importance of structural condition monitoring and component quality in elevated urban rail systems. For Dhaka Metro Rail, the measures are intended to address identified defects while strengthening ongoing safety monitoring across critical viaduct structures.
