China Railway Handles 954 Million Passenger Trips During Summer Rush

China, September 2026 – China’s national railway system concluded its summer travel rush after carrying 954 million passenger trips between July 1 and August 31. The period highlighted the scale of China’s passenger rail network, alongside growing international, tourism and event-related demand for rail services.

China State Railway Group operated an average of more than 11,600 passenger trains per day during the two-month period, adding services where demand increased. Foreign nationals accounted for more than 4.4 million rail trips, nearly one-third higher than the previous year, reflecting the growing contribution of international tourism to railway passenger volumes.

Cross-border rail services also recorded strong growth. The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway carried more than 6.2 million cross-border passengers, up over 3 percent year on year, while the China-Laos Railway handled around 56,000 passengers, an increase of nearly 56 percent. Other international services connecting China with Mongolia, Russia, Vietnam and North Korea also supported cross-border travel.

Rail operators increasingly used specialised services to respond to changing passenger demand. Nearly 700 dedicated tourist trains and more than 350 customised services for concertgoers and sports fans were operated during the travel period. China Railway also expanded reservation initiatives and sold more than 25.3 million discounted student tickets, demonstrating how rail capacity is being adapted to specific travel segments.

The results underline the importance of operational flexibility as passenger rail networks become increasingly integrated with tourism, education, sporting events and international travel. China’s ability to deploy additional trains and specialised services during peak periods demonstrates how large-scale rail systems can use network capacity to support both mobility demand and wider regional economic activity.
