Railway fleet renewal is becoming increasingly important for urban transport systems seeking to improve service frequency, passenger comfort and operational reliability. China's CRRC has unveiled the first of 10 new five-car trainsets for Buenos Aires Metro Lines A and C, with the initial units expected to enter passenger service in April 2027 following testing and commissioning.

China, October 2026 – CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles has unveiled the first new trainset being manufactured for Argentina's Buenos Aires metro network. The order, placed in January 2025, comprises 10 five-car trainsets intended to increase service frequencies and improve passenger services on Lines A and C. The first two trains are scheduled to arrive in Argentina in January 2027 before undergoing testing and commissioning.

The new trains will incorporate several passenger-focused features, including air-conditioning, CCTV surveillance and integrated audio-visual passenger information systems. Each carriage will be equipped with four CCTV cameras, while interior improvements include non-slip fibreglass seating and dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility. Braille signage will also be installed beside the doors to improve accessibility for visually impaired passengers.

The additional rolling stock is expected to strengthen capacity on Line A and Line C, with the latter serving two of Buenos Aires' major railway hubs. The new trains form part of the city's wider programme to modernise its century-old underground railway network and improve passenger services. According to Javier Ibañez, president of metro development authority Subterráneos de Buenos Aires, the fleet renewal will contribute to improving service quality across key corridors.

Alongside the rolling stock programme, Buenos Aires is advancing infrastructure improvements across its metro network. Authorities have already renovated 21 stations and are undertaking further modernisation works. Separately, Subterráneos de Buenos Aires has awarded Zhuzhou CRRC Times Electric a contract to upgrade the signalling system on Line B, including the implementation of Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology. New trains for Line B are also being prepared as part of the wider renewal programme.

The developments highlight Buenos Aires' broader strategy of combining rolling stock replacement, signalling upgrades and station improvements to strengthen urban rail performance. With new trains expected to enter service progressively from 2027, the programme represents an important step towards improving passenger capacity, accessibility and operational standards across Argentina's capital city metro network.
