Digital signalling upgrades are becoming a priority as rail operators seek to improve safety and operational reliability. Hitachi Rail has won a contract to modernise the automatic train protection system on Taiwan’s EMU3000 fleet.

TAIPEI, May 2026 – Railway operators in Asia are investing in onboard signalling and train control technologies to enhance safety and reliability. Upgrading automatic train protection (ATP) systems is seen as a cost-effective approach to improve performance while prolonging the lifespan of modern trains.

Hitachi Rail has secured a contract with Taiwan Railway Corporation to retrofit the ATP system on 600 EMU3000 intercity trains with its onboard signalling technology. This upgrade will enhance compatibility with existing infrastructure and improve operational resilience.

Since entering service in 2021, the EMU3000 trains have been essential to Taiwan’s long-distance passenger services. The modernisation is expected to enhance fault diagnostics, reduce maintenance needs, and increase system availability.

This project aligns with Taiwan Railway’s strategy to modernise services and improve safety standards, while also strengthening Hitachi Rail's presence in Taiwan. Overall, the trend of retrofitting advanced control systems rather than replacing rolling stock is expected to continue in the global rail technology market.
