Hydrogen-powered rail technology continues to attract interest as operators seek low-emission alternatives for non-electrified routes. Hyundai Rotem is targeting commercial deployment of its hydrogen rail vehicles by 2029, although high infrastructure costs and mixed international project outcomes continue to shape the pace of adoption.

South Korea, July 2026 — Hyundai Rotem is advancing its hydrogen rail programme with the goal of launching commercial operations by 2029, positioning fuel cell technology as a zero-emission alternative for regional and urban rail services. The initiative builds on the company's broader hydrogen mobility strategy and follows the development of hydrogen-powered trams and other rail vehicles for the domestic market.

The company is leveraging hydrogen fuel cell technology developed within the Hyundai Motor Group to expand its rail portfolio beyond conventional electric rolling stock. Hyundai Rotem has already secured orders for hydrogen-powered trams for projects including Daejeon Metro Line 2, which is expected to enter service in 2028, providing a platform for commercialising the technology ahead of broader deployment.

Despite the technological progress, commercial adoption remains constrained by the high cost of hydrogen production, refuelling infrastructure, and vehicle deployment. The experience of hydrogen rail projects such as Foshan in China has highlighted the economic challenges associated with scaling hydrogen-powered transport, reinforcing the need for supportive policies, infrastructure investment, and lower hydrogen costs before widespread market adoption becomes viable.

For the rail industry, hydrogen propulsion is expected to complement rather than replace electrified railways. It is considered particularly suitable for regional and rural lines where full electrification may be economically difficult. Manufacturers are increasingly positioning hydrogen trains as a solution for decarbonising diesel-operated routes while avoiding the capital costs of installing overhead electrification.

As governments pursue net-zero transport strategies, hydrogen rail technology is likely to remain an important area of innovation. Hyundai Rotem's planned commercial launch reflects growing confidence in fuel cell propulsion, although achieving long-term success will depend on continued reductions in hydrogen costs, expanded refuelling infrastructure, and proven operational performance.
