Integrating renewable energy and reliable power systems into railway infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as transport operators seek to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs. Malaysia’s MRT Corp and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) have signed a strategic agreement to explore sustainable energy solutions, beginning with facilities supporting the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link.

Malaysia, October 2026 – MRT Corp and TNB formalised their partnership through a memorandum of understanding on 21 October 2026. The initial collaboration will focus on the Bukit Chagar Immigration, Customs and Quarantine (ICQ) Complex and Wadi Hana Depot, two key facilities associated with the RTS Link project. The agreement aims to strengthen the sustainability, efficiency and operational resilience of Malaysia’s rail infrastructure.

The partnership covers three main areas: renewable energy, electric vehicle (EV) charging and green mobility, and electrical reliability and maintenance. Both organisations will assess opportunities to install solar energy systems at suitable facilities and introduce energy-saving measures to reduce electricity consumption and operating expenses. They will also explore EV charging infrastructure at selected MRT Corp premises to complement public transport facilities and encourage lower-emission mobility options.

Electrical reliability is another priority, particularly for facilities that support essential railway operations. The companies will examine ways to improve the safety, maintenance and resilience of electrical systems and generator sets. These measures are intended to help ensure that critical rail facilities maintain dependable power supplies while improving long-term asset management and operational efficiency.

The collaboration builds on the organisations’ existing involvement in Malaysia’s MRT1, MRT2, Penang Mutiara Line and RTS Link projects. The RTS Link was selected as the starting point after receiving a five-star Sustainable INFRASTAR rating from the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia. MRT Corp and TNB will also explore extending the partnership to other railway infrastructure assets, supporting Malaysia’s wider energy transition objectives under the National Energy Transition Roadmap.

The agreement reflects a broader shift towards treating energy management as an integral part of railway planning and operations. By exploring renewable power, more efficient electrical systems and charging facilities, MRT Corp and TNB aim to support more sustainable transport infrastructure. The results of these initiatives could provide a foundation for incorporating energy-efficiency measures into other rail projects across Malaysia, subject to the outcomes of further assessments and implementation decisions.
