KTMB Expands ETS Capacity to Support Johor State Election Travel

Malaysia, June 2026 — KTMB has announced additional southbound ETS services operating from 10 to 12 July to facilitate travel for Johor residents returning home to vote in the state's 16th election on 11 July. Ticket sales began on 19 June through KTMB's digital platforms, website and station ticketing facilities.

The temporary service expansion is intended to accommodate higher passenger volumes expected before polling day and to provide a convenient alternative to road transport. The additional trains will operate on the southern corridor, supporting smoother travel for voters while helping to alleviate congestion on major highways during the election period.

The initiative demonstrates how rail operators can use operational flexibility to respond to predictable spikes in travel demand associated with national events. By introducing targeted additional services, KTMB aims to maintain passenger convenience while maximising the utilisation of its expanding electrified rail network. The move also reinforces the growing importance of the ETS network following its recent extension to Johor Bahru, which has significantly enhanced north–south rail connectivity in Peninsular Malaysia.

Johor's state legislative assembly was dissolved on 1 June, paving the way for the state election. The additional ETS services form part of broader efforts to ensure efficient mobility during the election period while encouraging greater use of public transport for intercity travel.

As Malaysia continues expanding its electrified railway network, demand-responsive service planning is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting large-scale travel movements, improving passenger accessibility and reinforcing rail as a reliable mode of transport during major public events.
