Railway modernisation is driving demand for specialised manufacturing capacity, integrated supply chains and locally produced rail equipment across India. Odisha is preparing to establish a dedicated rail-tech park in Khordha, aiming to consolidate manufacturers, engineering firms and component suppliers within a common industrial ecosystem.

India, August 2026 – Odisha is preparing to launch what Maritime Gateway describes as India’s first dedicated rail-tech park at the Sahaspur industrial estate in Khordha district. The facility is intended to support manufacturers of railway equipment, components and specialised engineering products as the country expands and modernises its rail network.

The Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) has completed preliminary assessments and land development work, while a detailed project report has also been prepared. The proposed park follows growing investment in railway manufacturing in the state, with six projects involving companies including Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel, Jupiter Wagons, Synomac Technology, Rahee Track Technology, Amsted Steel Foundaries and Surlon India. Maritime Gateway reports a combined investment of around Rs 24,600 crore, with a further six to eight projects potentially expected.

Among the major projects are a proposed railway wheelset manufacturing facility by Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel, valued at more than Rs 2,500 crore, and a Rs 1,500-crore rail coach manufacturing unit planned by Jupiter Wagons. The wider park is expected to provide shared infrastructure that can bring major manufacturers together with ancillary suppliers, MSMEs, technology companies and specialised service providers.

For the rail sector, the development could strengthen domestic supply chains for equipment such as wheels, axles, coaches, wagons, braking systems, electrical equipment and track-related products. A concentrated manufacturing base may also improve coordination between large manufacturers and smaller component suppliers, while supporting technology development and engineering capabilities closer to major industrial and logistics networks.

The initiative forms part of Odisha’s broader strategy of developing specialised industrial clusters and strengthening its manufacturing position. With Indian Railways continuing to invest in passenger rolling stock, freight capacity, signalling, safety and infrastructure, the emergence of a dedicated rail manufacturing ecosystem in Khordha could give the state a larger role in supplying equipment for India’s next phase of railway expansion.
