Rapid Rail Extends Peak-Hour Services for Ramadan Commuters

KUALA LUMPUR, February 2026 — As Ramadan approaches, the operational dynamics of Kuala Lumpur undergo significant changes. During this period, offices tend to close earlier, markets become busier, and a considerable number of commuters travel home before iftar. In response to these changes, Malaysia's rail network is making necessary adjustments.

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd is set to extend its peak-hour operating hours across all urban rail lines throughout Ramadan, as announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke during a parliamentary session. This adjustment aims to better align with the altered daily routines of Muslim commuters.

The morning peak service will now begin at 6:30 AM and continue until 9:30 AM, while the evening peak service will commence at 4 PM and extend until 8 PM. This is a change from the previous schedule, where evening services typically began at 5 PM and concluded around 7:30 PM.

These alterations reflect the reality that during Ramadan, many workers leave their offices earlier to prepare meals and return home before sunset. As traditional rail scheduling often follows fixed commuting patterns, these services must adapt accordingly.

Minister Loke emphasized that the increase in service frequency is intended to ensure more efficient passenger movement and greater comfort during the early evening commute before iftar.

Across the Klang Valley network, which includes the Kelana Jaya, Ampang/Sri Petaling, Kajang, and Putrajaya lines, trains generally operate every three to six minutes during peak periods. By extending the operating hours, the service aims to distribute passenger demand more evenly over a longer timeframe, rather than concentrating it into a limited evening window.

This initiative represents a comprehensive operational adjustment. Authorities have indicated that Rapid Rail has strengthened its maintenance and reliability practices by implementing predictive and preventive maintenance strategies, deploying technical personnel aboard trains, and enhancing crowd control measures at stations.

The ministry has noted that rail disruptions have decreased in recent years, with any service interruption defined as a stoppage exceeding five minutes. The operator is committed to addressing such interruptions promptly.

Transit agencies worldwide often face challenges related to seasonal demand patterns. However, during Ramadan, peak commuting occurs earlier in the evening. By extending high-frequency services, rather than merely increasing the number of trains, Rapid Rail aims to proactively manage passenger flow and reduce congestion.

For commuters, these policy changes may lead to less crowded platforms and more efficient journeys home before sunset, thereby reflecting a small yet significant operational adjustment that aligns the rail infrastructure with the cultural practices of the community.
