South Korea Strengthens High-Speed Rail Safety Ahead Of Integrated Operations

South Korea, September 2026 — The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is conducting a safety management inspection of the country’s high-speed railway system ahead of the Chuseok holiday. The review is focused on operational readiness as high-speed rail integration leads to increased train frequencies.

A key area of the inspection is Korail’s availability of qualified high-speed rail engineers and the effectiveness of training programmes. Authorities are assessing whether sufficient technical personnel are in place and whether train crews can respond appropriately and quickly during emergency situations.

The ministry is also reviewing crowd-management measures at Seoul, Suseo and Busan stations, which are expected to experience heavy passenger volumes during the holiday period. Measures include additional safety personnel and separating passenger boarding and alighting flows to improve movement within stations.

Railway police will be deployed more extensively in areas considered vulnerable to crimes such as theft and sexual harassment. Authorities will also inspect AI-enabled CCTV monitoring systems to identify potential surveillance blind spots and strengthen security coverage across stations.

The inspection highlights the operational requirements that accompany high-speed rail network integration. As services become more frequent and passenger flows increase, maintaining sufficient specialist staff, emergency preparedness, station capacity and technology-supported security will remain important to ensuring reliable and safe railway operations.
