Thailand, August 2026 – The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) temporarily suspended services between Maruebo and Tanyong Mat stations on August 23 after railway personnel discovered damage to two concrete sleepers at Ban Maruebo in Ra-ngae district. The closure was announced at 9.48am following inspections by railway and security personnel.
A railway patrol first identified signs of an explosion near the track, while a subsequent drone inspection confirmed damage to the two sleepers. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams and security forces were deployed to inspect the area before SRT engineering personnel could enter and assess the damage. The railway authority said repairs would be undertaken as quickly as possible, although no reopening timetable was provided.
For the rail sector, the incident highlights the vulnerability of railway infrastructure in areas exposed to security threats. Track components such as concrete sleepers are critical to maintaining alignment and safe train operations, meaning even localised damage can require services to be suspended until the affected section has been secured and inspected.
The railway disruption followed 51 violent incidents reported across Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat on the preceding Saturday night, with three further explosions reported in Pattani and Narathiwat on Sunday morning. No injuries were reported in the incidents cited by The Nation.
The temporary closure demonstrates the importance of integrating security assessments into railway operations and maintenance planning.
