Central Railway Accelerates Modernization with LHB Coach Rollout on 16 Trains

INDIA, November 2025 — Indian Railways is undergoing a significant modernization drive, with Central Railway taking a proactive step by phasing out older Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches. This initiative aims to enhance passenger safety and comfort across its network.

Central Railway is set to introduce modern Linke-Hofmann-Busch (LHB) coaches on 16 of its trains. These German-designed, Indian-manufactured coaches are equipped with advanced safety features, including anti-climbing devices and fire-retardant materials. They also boast a higher operating speed of 160 kmph, with a design speed of up to 200 kmph, a notable improvement over the 140 kmph of traditional ICF coaches.

The transition to LHB coaches signifies a substantial upgrade in passenger experience, offering greater comfort through features like a longer car body, LED lighting, and 5-pin charging sockets. Efficient braking systems with disc brakes and enhanced evacuation capabilities via four emergency openable windows further contribute to passenger well-being. The inclusion of an Emergency Light Unit (ELU) with a 6-hour backup adds another layer of safety.

These LHB coaches, a product of German engineering and Indian manufacturing prowess, represent a leap forward in railway technology and passenger amenities.

This rollout is part of a broader strategy by Indian Railways to modernize its fleet, ensuring safer, faster, and more comfortable journeys for millions of passengers nationwide.
