Progress Rail Secures Key Signalling Contract for Thailand's Khon Kaen-Nong Khai Railway Modernization
THAILAND, November 2025 - Thailand is advancing its railway infrastructure modernization efforts with a significant contract awarded to Progress Rail for the northern section of its rail network. This development is a key component of the State Railway of Thailand's (SRT) broader initiative to enhance operational capacity and connectivity.
The contract focuses on providing essential signalling and telecommunications solutions for the 167-kilometer stretch between Khon Kaen and Nong Khai, as part of the second phase of the SRT's track-doubling project. Progress Rail will be responsible for the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of advanced systems, including a traffic management system, computer-based interlocking, and the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1.
This upgrade is poised to significantly increase the railway's operational capacity, improve service efficiency, and bolster safety standards. Furthermore, it aims to strengthen international connectivity, particularly for freight and passenger services linking Thailand with Laos, thereby modernizing the region's metre-gauge network.
Notably, this project marks Progress Rail's inaugural involvement in wayside signalling projects within Thailand, expanding its regional expertise beyond onboard ETCS Level 1 applications. This achievement underscores the company's growing influence in Southeast Asia's evolving railway landscape.
Ultimately, the modernization of the Khon Kaen-Nong Khai line represents a crucial step in Thailand's ambition to establish itself as a vital transport hub in Southeast Asia. The project is expected to enhance regional economic and trade potential by delivering a more efficient and reliable railway service.
