Proactive Maintenance Drives Sharp Decline in Rapid Rail Disruptions
KUALA LUMPUR, November 2025 — The reliability of Malaysia’s Rapid Rail network has shown significant improvement in 2025. As of August this year, the network recorded only 25 service disruptions, a sharp decline compared to 71 disruptions in 2024 and 118 in 2023.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke credited this progress to Rapid Rail’s proactive and data-driven maintenance strategy. The operator has adopted condition-based and predictive maintenance, supported by the installation of smart sensors on critical components to detect early signs of technical issues before they escalate. A dedicated System Analytics Centre has also been established to provide real-time monitoring of trains and rail infrastructure.
These initiatives have contributed to a major rise in the network’s mean kilometres between failure (MKBF), which reached 550,000 km as of August 2025, up from 330,300 km in 2024 and 160,000 km in 2023. Prasarana, Rapid Rail’s parent company, aims to further enhance reliability by targeting an MKBF of 1 million km by the second quarter of 2026.
In a parliamentary written reply, Loke explained that these achievements stem from long-term service agreements with original equipment suppliers, enabling faster access to spare parts and technical expertise. Rapid Rail has also incorporated best practices from leading international operators, including those in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taipei, to strengthen its maintenance ecosystem.
Overall, the data indicates a clear upward trajectory in Rapid Rail’s service reliability. By prioritizing predictive and preventive maintenance, the operator is delivering a more dependable urban rail system, boosting commuter confidence and setting a strong benchmark for the regional rail industry.
