Kerala Advances 750km Rail Network Expansion with Detailed Project Report Initiation

BEIJING, December 2025 — Indian Railways is undertaking a significant expansion of its network in Kerala, with the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) underway for over 750 kilometers of new railway lines. This initiative is a crucial step towards enhancing train operations, increasing service frequency, and bolstering the state's overall rail infrastructure, aiming to support regional economic growth.

The national transporter has allocated a substantial budgetary outlay of Rs 3,042 crore for Kerala in the Financial Year 2025-26. In a written statement to the Lok Sabha on December 3, 2025, the Railway Minister revealed that since 2022-23, nine surveys (three for new lines and six for doubling) covering a total length of 1,124 km within Kerala have been sanctioned and are in progress.

This ambitious project aims to significantly improve connectivity and operational efficiency within the state. The development is expected to strengthen Kerala's rail infrastructure, facilitating smoother train movements and enabling more frequent services. The successful execution of these projects is anticipated to provide a considerable boost to the regional economy.

Key projects for which DPRs are being prepared include the Angamali–Sabarimala new line (111 km) with an estimated cost of Rs 3,727 crore, and doubling projects such as Ernakulam–Kumbalam (8 km, Rs 595 crore), Kumbalam–Thuravur (16 km, Rs 803 crore), Trivandrum–Kanyakumari (87 km, Rs 3,786 crore), and Shoranur–Vallathol (10 km, Rs 367 crore). The Railways have already deposited Rs 1,975 crore for land acquisition, with support from the Kerala government being essential to expedite the process.

These developments underscore India's commitment to modernizing its railway network and enhancing regional connectivity. By focusing on infrastructure expansion and operational improvements, the projects in Kerala are set to play a vital role in the nation's broader transportation strategy and economic development goals.
