Klang Valley Rail Service Performance Reaffirmed Amidst Public Concerns

KUALA LUMPUR, December 2025 — The Malaysian Ministry of Transport (MOT) has firmly refuted claims that rail services in the Klang Valley have deteriorated, asserting that recent figures indicate a marked improvement in technical fault frequency and service disruptions compared to previous years. This stance comes in response to public frustrations highlighted by media reports concerning recurring interruptions on the LRT, MRT, and monorail systems.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that Prasarana Malaysia Berhad has been directed to provide a comprehensive report to the media, emphasizing that the number of faults and disruptions has significantly decreased. He acknowledged that disruptions are unavoidable but stressed that the current situation is not worse than in the past, based on available data.

Significant investments, amounting to hundreds of millions of ringgit, have been allocated for maintenance and the procurement of new train sets, including for the Kelana Jaya Line, as part of ongoing service upgrades. These efforts underscore a commitment to enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the public rail network.

While acknowledging that unforeseen factors like weather can impact operations, the ministry also recognized Prasarana's need to strengthen communication with commuters during service disruptions. The minister clarified that the age of trains is not the primary cause of issues, as long as they are maintained according to schedule, with replacement decisions based on cost-benefit analyses.

The Ministry maintains that passenger safety is paramount and that concerns regarding aging infrastructure are unfounded due to regular maintenance. The overall message conveyed is one of continuous improvement in rail service quality, coupled with a focus on better public information dissemination during operational challenges.
